What a service actually includes

Most workshops say “comprehensive servicing” and stop there. Here is the list, before you book.

The three most people book

Each one written out in full, so you know what you are paying for before you hand the keys over.

Minor Service

Every 5,000 km / 6 months

Recommended every 5,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first. Price varies with the make, model, parts and the type of oil the engine needs. Commercial, 4X4, diesel and imported vehicles are no problem — the workshop runs up-to-date scan tools and the equipment these services need.

  • Replace the engine oil and filter
  • Check all exterior lights and the horn
  • Check and top up all fluids
  • Full under-vehicle check
  • Inspect belts, hoses and exhaust
  • Inspect brakes, tyres and pressures
  • Complete safety inspection
  • Top quality oils and parts only
Price varies by make, model, parts & oilNo flat rate

Major Service

Every 20,000 km / 24 months

Recommended every 20,000 km or 24 months, whichever comes first. Price varies with the make, model, the parts required (spark plugs, filters and so on) and the type of oils used.

  • Everything in the minor service
  • Replace the air filter
  • Replace all spark plugs
  • Replace the coolant
  • Replace fuel and cabin filters (some models)
  • Complete safety inspection
  • Top quality oils and parts only
Everything in a minor, plus the wear itemsNo flat rate

Log Book Servicing

To the maker's schedule

Your new car's log book stamped and the service carried out to the manufacturer's schedule, at an independent workshop rather than the dealer. Your new vehicle warranty stays intact — under Australian consumer law a manufacturer cannot void it simply because the servicing was done elsewhere, provided the schedule is followed and quality parts are used.

  • Log book stamped to the manufacturer's schedule
  • New car warranty stays intact
  • Genuine or equivalent quality parts

A tune is not a plug change

Tune

Well past a plug change

A full tune, going well past a plug change — ignition, fuelling, emissions and the vehicle's computer all checked and corrected.

  • Replace spark plugs, rotor and fuel filter
  • Check and replace distributor cap and ignition wires as needed
  • Check and adjust timing and idle speed
  • Clean the fuel injectors
  • Check ignition performance — firing voltage and ignition patterns
  • Check compression and power balance
  • Check manifold intake vacuum for exhaust restrictions
  • Check exhaust emissions
  • Scan the vehicle computer for trouble codes
  • Check all emission controls and install a new air filter

The honest answer

Why we won’t advertise a flat price

J & L quotes per vehicle rather than advertising a flat price, because the two biggest costs in a service — oil and filters — differ enormously between vehicles. A modern European diesel may need seven litres of a specific low-ash synthetic; an older four-cylinder takes four litres of conventional oil. A single advertised price either overcharges the second car or won't cover the first.

Repairs and the rest of it

All makes and models, petrol, diesel and LPG. If it is mechanical and it drives, it is worth a call.

4WD Servicing and Repairs

4WDs serviced and repaired properly, including diesels — from a LandCruiser that tows every weekend to a farm ute that never sees a sealed road.

Brake and Clutch Repairs

Brake and clutch inspection, repair and replacement — pads, discs, drums, lines and fluid, clutch kits and hydraulics. The two systems you notice the fastest when they are wrong.

Steering and Suspension

Shocks, struts, bushes, ball joints, tie rods, power steering and the rest of what holds a car straight and level. Worn suspension is also one of the most common reasons a vehicle fails a roadworthy.

Transmission Services

Automatic and manual transmission servicing and repair — fluid and filter changes, diagnosis of slipping, shuddering and harsh shifts.

EFI Diagnosis

Electronic fuel injection diagnosis with up-to-date scan tools. Engine light on, running rough, poor economy, won't start — the fault codes read properly and the cause traced, rather than parts replaced on a guess.

Head Gaskets and Engine Repairs

Head gasket replacement, overheating diagnosis, timing belts and chains, and heavier internal engine work. The jobs a lot of workshops send away, done here.

LPG Repairs

LPG system servicing, repair and diagnosis for gas and dual-fuel vehicles.

Truck and Bus Servicing (up to 4.5 tonne)

Light trucks up to 4.5 tonne and school buses serviced and maintained — the size of vehicle most car workshops turn away and most truck workshops over-charge for.

Farm and Machinery Servicing

Tractors, ride-on mowers and farm vehicles serviced and repaired. A hangover from the mobile days, and still done — the reason a workshop on the edge of Melbourne keeps servicing properties further west.

Fleet Maintenance

Scheduled servicing and repair for business fleets — vans, utes and light trucks kept on the road and on a maintenance schedule, with one workshop and one invoice.

General Mechanical Repairs

All mechanical repairs, all makes and models, petrol, diesel and LPG. If it is mechanical and it drives, it is worth a call.
